The Serratelli Hat Company is a firm with a long history—over 125 years supplying raw materials to the headwear industry. Two Serratelli brothers began their business in 1878 by recycling the debris remaining after slicing the edge of the brim of a fur felt hat to round it evenly. The debris was known as “felt roundings” and sold to hat manufacturers worldwide. Each successive Serratelli generation expanded our family business by selling additional raw material products to the hat industry.
Serratelli went on to establish ourselves as a leader in the trade by becoming one of the only companies in the world to produce the highest quality beaver felt. Beaver felt is the most important component of the felt mixture and sets the quality standard for hats. Beaver fur is measured in quantities between 4X (the lowest quality) and 1000X. The sale of this product helped Serratelli establish a place in our market as a provider of the best quality hatters fur. It was a natural progression for our company to start using our fur in felt bodies, which are the forms used to make finished hats. Serratelli hat bodies are sold to well known felt producers and hat finishers worldwide and set the standard for providing high quality materials at a reasonable price.
After succeeding at the fur and hat body stages, we took the next step to set up a factory to turn hat bodies into finished hats. Creating finished hats is a very complicated process since the equipment required is very unique and specialized. Much of our machinery had to be refurbished or custom built. More importantly, finishing hats is a very labor-intensive process that requires skill, craftsmanship and expertise.
After years of development and investment, Serratelli Hat Company now operates one of the only hat finishing plants in the United States. We are one of only a handful of companies that has total control over our hat manufacturing process from start to finish.
